Parokya Ni Edgar
Parokya Ni Edgar is a Filipino band originated in
Quezon City, Metro Manila, Philippines. It was formed on year 1993 of
group of pure Ateneo de Manila High School. The band is known for its
original novelty rock songs but then varying from one genre to another, alternative rock- pop rock, funk- rapcore while still maintaining the its trademark of style, providing relief to the listeners.
The band was previously called “Comic Relief” and was originally composed of vocalists Alfonso “Chito” Miranda, Gabrielle Ignatius “Gab” Chee-Kee and Francis Vincent “Vinci” Montaner and Miko and Jerick are the guitarists. They make themselves worthy of the opening number of Eraserhead’s concert by jamming and practicing after school. The great break made the band decide to a drummer, Ferdinand “Dindin” Moreno and a bassist, Buhawi “Buwi” Meneses. After high school, Miko and Jerick left the band to pursue other interest in life. The band was not discouraged at all and even invites Darius Gerard “Dariuken” Semaña to join the group as the lead guitarist. They eventually changed their name into now-known “Parokya Ni Edgar”.
Parokya Ni Edgar started to play at Club Dredd, a legendary local band center. Though influenced by foreign bands, Parokya Ni Edgar stood out, playing like no other bands. Their extreme performances, ridiculous actions and silly jokes made them more popular to their patrons.
A gig at Club Dredd caught the attention of late “Bella Tan”, the managing director of Universal Records and immediately made contract with them. In a short notice, Parokya Ni Edgar’s singles were heard throughout the country through different air waves such as Buloy, Trip, Lutong Bahay and so much more. Khangkhungkherrnitz, their first album on 1996 instantly became a triple platinum hit. On 1998, the band released its second album entitled Buruguduystunstugudunstuy. Gulong Itlog Gulong is their third album. It was set to public on 2000. Other albums are Edgar, Edgar, Musikahan(2002), Bigotilyo(2003), Halina Sa Parokya(2005) and Solid(2007).
The band stays intact through time while preserving the unsurpassed musical power in the Philippine recording scene. Chito’s musical and band leadership was said to be the secret of Parokya Ni Edgar’s success. All music ideas pass first to his judgment and relate to the present preferences of the audience. The humors and relentless technique of self-immolation made contributions to music and leaves a mark to the hearts of their listeners.
They are now making jingles for politicians and novelty songs which in direct line with Lito Camo. Parokya Ni Edgar made collaboration album not limited to only one label, Universal Records but several labels such as Sony BMG and Star Records. They can even be invited at children’s party and stag party.
