Asin
The Story and Songs of AsinAsin is a Pinoy band of folk rock music. They were originally called ”Salt of the Earth”
during their formation on 1970’s. The original name was derived from
the song of Joan Baez but eventually, they changed it to Asin for more
Pinoy taste. Asin is the translation of Salt in Filipino. The band was
made up of four members by currently they were two left. Asin is the
first Filipino band who used traditional instruments for their music and
even studied tribal music for the originality of music.
Lolita “Nene” P. Carbon was born on November 12 in Manila. She’s a songwriter and the vocalist of the band. She currently plays the acoustic rhythm guitars and her voice is one of the best voices in the recording industry. Alfredo “Pendong” C. Aban Jr. is a current songwriter and also the lead vocalist of the band. He plays the acoustic and electric rhythm guitars as well as faglong, paldong and kubing. He formed another band named Ang Grupong Pendong.
The band was formed on 1977 when Lolita Carbon met Cesar “Saro” Bañares, Pendong Aban and Mike Pillora on a certain folk rock club. Saro and Pendong were from Mindanao and Lolita from Manila. The four decided to form a group and named it ”Salt of the Earth”. The group was discovered by Mr. Tony Ocampo, the General Manager of Vicor and changed the name into ASIN.

Their self-titled debut album was released on September 1, 1978 with “Masdan Mo Ang Kapaligiran” as the first single. In 1988, they did their fund-raising concert in Japan. Several songs went popular including some environmental hits as “Masdan Mo Ang Kapaligiran” and “Ang Bayan Kong Sinilangan”. According to Aban, some of their songs were based on their experience in Mindanao and wrote them for peace and for a better environment in Mindanao. They sometimes use traditional instruments such as kulintang for a more native sensation.
The band released several albums before the disbanding of the group such as Himig Ng Pag-ibig (1979), Himig Ng Lahi (1983), Mga Ginintuang Awitin ng Asin (1984), Mga Awiting ng Bayan Kong Pilipinas (1985), Asin sa Atubiling Panahon (1986), Himig Kayumaggi (1987), Sinta (1988) and ASIN- Masdan Mo Ang Kapaligiran Special Collector’s Edition (1994).
When Saro refused to sing for a lawyer, he was assassinated in Cotabato on 1993. His departure disbanded the group. Pendong made his own group, Ang Grupong Pendong and Lolita went on her solo career.
On 2000, the former group decided to form the band again but Mike eventually backed out and chose not to pursue. So Asin became a two-some band and released their album entitled Pag-ibg, Pagbabago, Pagpapatuloy under Vicor Music Inc. on May 2001. On 2005, Ang Bayan Kong Sinilangan- Paglalakbay Sa Mga Awitin Ng Asin was released.
