Freestyle
Freestyle is a Filipino band from Davao. They are
composed of seven gifted musicians. With their numerous guestings,
sold-out concerts and platinum awards and albums, Freestly is really one
of the hottest band in town and one of the busiest bands around.
Jinky Barlis Vidal-Suzara is simply known as “Jinky” was the band’s female vocalist. She was born on December 29 in Davao City. She attended his college at Ateneo de Davao. Richard Felix Rocha Suzara a.k.a. “Tat” handled the lead guitars. He was born on October 28 in Manila, Philippines. He attended schools from Prep.- Grade 1 in St. Benedict’s Academy and St. John’s Academy. From Grade 2-4 in St. Rita College, from Grade 5- 2nd year high school in Rizal Memorial College in Davao and proceed to Ateneo de Davao in college. Joshua Silonga Desiderio is sometimes called as “Josh”, “Jops” or “Kabo”. He was born on July 2 in Manila and attended schools as Bagumbayan Elementary School, Gov. Andres Pascual High School and Philippine Christian University. Angelo Michael “Mike” Villamiel Luis was born on December 20 in Manila. He attended school in Ateneo and UP. Nicolas N. Cabardo is called “Nikki” by co-members, was born on November 15 in Cebu City. Attended schools like Anglicum and U.P. Diliman. Gerald John Aguirre Banzon is “Gerd” of January 11 from Manila. He attended schools like Benedictine Abbey School, PCMV, UST and La Salle. Jose Rommel Zamora de la Cruz was called “Barney” from Manila. Born on February 19, he attended schools in St. James School Q.C. and DLSU-Taft.
The band was formed on 1996 by Tat Suzara and Jinky Vidal. The original members were Top Suzara with the guitars and male vocals, Jinky Vidal with the female vocals, Tat Suzara with the lead guitars, Carlo Tapia on bass, Gerard Banzon on drums and Obet Luzon with the keyboards.
They played their first gig at the APO View Hotel in Davao. They submitted a demo tape to Viva Records and was signed with Neo Records, a company of Viva Records. Later, they released their self-titled debut album with hit singles “Before I Let You Go” and “So Slow”.
In 1998, their second album was released entitled Freestyle This Time. During the time also when Obet Luzon left the band and was replaced by Nikki Cabardo. The released other hit singles “Down and Funky”, “‘Till I Found You”, “This Time” and many more.
The band keep on receiving positive gain from the public and eventually held their first major concert entitled “Freestyle Live” at the Big Dome, Araneta Coliseum on October 2000. Their special guests include Pops Fernandez, Gary Valenciano and Andrew E.
Their successful concert were followed at the Big Dome again on February 14, 2001 for the sensational “Love Concert”. They played with the divine diva, Zsa Zsa Padilla and Lani Misalucha, the Asia’s Nightingale.
On April 2001, to satisfy the cravings of the Filipino crowd, they performed at Ynares Gym at Antipolo dubbed as “High On Love Concert”. Together with them were Zsa Zsa Padilla and Janno Gibbs. In addition to their concerts, they had their “Freestyle On Fire” on June 15 & 15, 2001 followed by “Freestyle On Full Swing” on June 29 & 30, both at the Music Museum.
On August 2001, they rocked the Big Dome with their concert “Freestyle: All Hits” with special guests Ogie Alcasid and Aiza Seguerra. Their “Symphony in F” with the Manila Philharmonic Orchestra was held on November 24, 2001 at the same venue.
On 2002, their Back 2 Back series concert with Side A at the Araneta Coliseum was held for four unforgettable nights starting February 8,9 22 and March 23, 2002.
They currently playing gigs in different popular bars in town like 8th Day, Hard Rock Café, Dish, Fat Tuesday, Nth Degree, Ratsky, Chatterbox, Padi’s Point, UFO Planet Rock etc.
